The Environment and Our Business

BACKGROUND OF THE INDUSTRY “ENVIRONMENT” AND WHY THIS PROJECT MATTERS

As various countries of the world progress to achieve high-impact socio-economic goals such as improved standard of living, poverty eradication, reduced unemployment rate, and improved education and health care services, through industrialization, such improvement does not come without its own price. The price to pay in actualizing the aforementioned socio-economic goals is the aftermath of such anthropogenic activities on the mother earth “our environment.”

Vast spectrum of environmental issues arises from industrialization which majorly include but not limited to; climate change, air-, water-, land- pollution, mortality of terrestrial and aquatic species. The environmental issues do not only threaten global environment, but significantly affects economic and social welfare, since large amount of money is actually been spent to solve these challenges.

With the recent transition towards solving these environmental challenges through sustainable and environmental-friendly approach, the world is at the foremost of ensuring industrial development goes in tandem with environmental sustainability.

Achieving environmental sustainability can only be achieved if key stakeholders like employers of labor, companies, manufacturers, and service providers incorporate environmental and sustainable processes and practices into their core organizations’ DNA.

The government is even more charged with the responsibility of ensuring all businesses products and services are environmentally compliant through putting in place;  strategies to monitor and ensure compliancy to environmental regulations and standards.

The proposed project will ensure that employers, companies, manufacturers, and service providers place sustainability and environmental-friendliness practices and processes. Our company sees a mutually reinforcing relationship between business analytics and compliance of businesses to achieving environmental and social sustainability.

RELEVANCE OF BUSINESS ANALYSTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

The role of business analysts in ensuring environmental sustainability is growing voraciously due to the fact that businesses and clients around the world are now getting more environmentally conscious. This should not be surprising because an environmental sustainable business enjoys the benefit of meeting customers’ needs, improved brand value, skyrocket business efficiency, attract valuable talents, and create more opportunities for such business. The role of a business analyst in assisting businesses to actualize the stated long-term benefits crosses along a myriad of activities which includes;

  • ensuring businesses comply with green regulations and international policies,
  • Environmental risk mitigation
  • Utilization of renewable sources of energy
  • Eco-labeling of IT products and services
  • disposal and recycling of IT resources in an eco-friendly manner
  • power management and energy-efficient computing
  • Data center-efficiency.

Out of all the duties expected of a business analyst, the most important responsibilities are the development of appropriate metrics to track results and identify impact of business activities on the environment, and to support the need for incessant improvement of sustainability program through evidence-based and data-driven approach, hence the relevance of this project at this critical period.

THE USE OF DETRIMENTAL AND TOXIC ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AS A VEHICLE TO RAISE AWARENESS AND COMPLIANCE ISSUES TO BUSINESSES

Fact 1: Global Climate Change Issues and Concern

The amount of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide released daily by businesses will continue to skyrocket and impact negatively on the environment. Anthropogenic activities such as Industrialization, oil and gas flaring, transport and vehicles are the major causes of climate change which causes food shortage, increased ambient temperature and extreme weather. According to a United State government organization report – Climate Science Special Report (CSSR)- the amount of greenhouse gases, most especially carbon dioxide emitted worldwide will determine the magnitude of climate change in the next few decades, and without any significant reduction in the emissions, an increase of 2°C in average global temperatures should be expected by the end of the century.

“Choices made today will determine the magnitude of climate change risks beyond the next few decades”

FACT 2: Waste Disposal in the U.S.

Even though Americans represent just 5% of the world’s population, they generate 30% of the world’s garbage. According to a U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report, a total of 292.4 million tons of MSW was generated in 2018, which was about 23.7 million tons more than the amount generated in 2017. Economically, above $100billion is spent annually to dispose of MSW in the U.S, which could have been spent on infrastructural development.

FACT 3: Ozone layer depletion and global food crises

With an increase in atmospheric ozone concentrations, food shortages will continue to be a global challenge. Doubled due to anthropogenic emissions of noxious gases, ozone levels in the atmosphere is earning significant attention leading to stringent air-quality controls. Even with this, the background ozone – ozone concentration present in the environment not induced by human activities- has been significantly increasing globally in the previous years. Reducing the production and consumption of ozone-deleting substances is pertinent to halting ozone-layer depletion, and this can only be achieved by substituting ozone-depletion substances with eco-friendly products.
